Deepen Your Couples Therapy Practice

Knowing a model is one thing. Recognising what is happening between two people in real time, deciding where to intervene, and adjusting when an intervention does not land is where clinical skill develops.

PORT Targeted Case Consultations provide a space to slow the work down and look closely at an actual couples therapy session.

During each 60-minute online consultation, one clinician will bring approximately 20 minutes of recorded couples therapy for review. Guided by Steven Dromgool, the group will explore the clinical process, the choices being made by the therapist, and how PORT might inform what happens next.

The purpose is not to find the single "right" intervention. It is to deepen clinical acumen and develop greater flexibility in recognising and responding to the relational process unfolding in the room.

What we will explore

Depending on the case, consultation may include:

  • How the 5 Step Therapy Progress Model is showing up in the work
  • How the Presence Bridge Model can guide intervention
  • How the Relational Brain Model helps make sense of the couple's interaction
  • Which PORT interventions may be useful at different points in the session
  • How to adapt interventions when the couple responds differently than expected
  • What the therapist may be missing, tracking or responding to
  • How PORT concepts present differently across couples and client groups

These three core models are central to PORT Level 3 and the development of advanced PORT practice. Relate

Who can attend?

Targeted Case Consultation is open to:

Counsellors developing toward couples therapy
You are welcome to attend and observe the case discussion, even if you have not completed PORT training.

Current couples therapists
Clinicians who want to deepen their understanding of relationship therapy and observe advanced case discussion are also welcome.

PORT Level 2 graduates
Clinicians who have completed PORT Level 2 may actively participate, ask questions and contribute to the clinical discussion.

Active participation is limited to PORT Level 2 graduates because the consultation assumes an established understanding of PORT concepts and is designed to work at greater clinical depth within the available time.

Working toward PORT Certification?

Targeted Case Consultation is a required component of PORT Level 3 Certification.

PORT Level 3 is designed to move clinicians beyond learning the model toward demonstrating PORT in their actual clinical work. The certification pathway includes participation in six Targeted Case Consultations, alongside further practice and assessment requirements. Relate

Would you like to present a case?

Each consultation centres on a recorded case presented by a clinician.

Presenters bring approximately 20 minutes of couples therapy video for review and work with Steven to explore how PORT is appearing in the session, how the core models relate to the clinical process, and where interventions might be adjusted or developed.

Develop the ability to see more in the room

PORT Level 1 introduces the concepts. Level 2 gives clinicians the opportunity to practise PORT skills live. Level 3 asks a different question:

What happens when you apply those ideas to the complexity of real couples therapy?

Targeted Case Consultation creates a place to examine that question carefully, with real clinical work, experienced guidance and a community of clinicians continuing to develop their couples therapy practice.
