Why I Offer a Free Consultation

I know how important it is for you to feel comfortable with the therapist you choose, especially since the quality of our therapeutic alliance and empathy (Along with your motivation) are the 3 most important factors for successful therapy. (If you’re curious, you can check out some research here that backs this up.)

I’m also at a stage in my career where I’m largely retired from therapy and spend most of my time and energy managing Relate. However, I do take on a handful of clients who are navigating issues that align with my interest areas. So this free 15–30 minute consultation isn’t just for you—it’s also for me to ensure I can genuinely offer what you need. During our call, we’ll figure out if existential humanistic therapy is a good match, and if we’d work well together given our mutual schedules and priorities.

Ultimately, I want you to have a sense of security and clarity when we decide to start therapy. If we’re a fit, we’ll move forward; if not, I’m happy to help point you in the right direction.

Who Benefits from Existential Humanistic Therapy?

I often work with people who:

Have long-term mild anxiety or depression that hasn’t been resolved by cognitive-behavioral therapy or medication.

Feel like they’ve “done everything right”—career, family, responsibilities—yet still sense something is missing.

Want to dive into bigger questions about life’s meaning, their freedom to choose, and how responsibility plays a role in their life satisfaction.

Crave a more authentic, present, and emotionally rich experience day to day.

This approach isn’t limited to a specific age group or background. Often, folks in their middle years gravitate to it because they’ve settled certain life milestones (like career or family) but still feel unfulfilled. But truly, it’s open to anyone ready for deeper introspection.

What You Can Walk Away With

A Renewed Sense of Purpose: Clarify your “why” and feel more motivated to move forward.

Deeper Emotional Awareness: Learn to really feel and name what’s going on inside you.

Greater Self-Responsibility: Recognize where you do have power and freedom to choose, and learn how to take healthy ownership of your life decisions.

Practical Changes: Over time, many clients make shifts in relationships, careers, or personal habits that create lasting fulfillment.

Common Misconceptions

Some folks assume existential humanistic therapy is only for a certain demographic—often older, wealthier people who enjoy intellectual philosophy. I want to clarify that it’s really for anyone who wants to explore deeper questions or break through a nagging feeling that “there must be more to life.” I also integrate a strong sense of community and relationships into my work, so it’s not just about “you versus the world.” We’ll explore how you connect with others and the environment around you.

If you’re worried about diving into existential topics, know that we’ll take it one step at a time. I believe in building a strong foundation of trust and clarity before exploring the big questions—no one is thrown into the deep end without support.

My Approach & Philosophy

I see existential therapy as a way to tackle fundamental human issues—things like mortality, isolation, responsibility, and freedom. The humanistic aspect is about personal growth, empathy, and authenticity. Put together, it’s a powerful blend that can help you:

Develop greater self-acceptance by identifying your unique values and needs.

Experience your emotions more fully and honestly.

Embrace the freedom you do have and take responsibility for your choices in a healthy way.

Rekindle a sense of purpose in daily life.

Existential Therapy is Purposeful Rather Than Directive

Direct but compassionate

Standing beside the client and facing life together - passionately

Helping to find direction and authority

What Sessions Look Like

Start with Your Present Concerns: I usually begin by asking, “What’s on your mind today?” That question sets the stage for where we’ll go. By staying present with your current concerns it keeps therapy practical and vibrant.

Explore Deeper Themes: As we talk, I reflect back on the core issues that brought you to therapy, using a variety of interviewing techniques from active listening to minfulness-based introspection to help you better understand your thoughts and feelings.

Practical Techniques: Although existential and humanistic principles guide us, I also draw on skills from Gestalt therapy, behaviorism, CBT, DBT, family therapy and others from my experience in community mental health.

Scaffolding Approach: I know diving into heavy existential questions can feel scary or overwhelming. So, I pace our sessions to meet you where you’re at, ensuring you feel supported each step of the way. Therapy is yours, I'll meet you where you're at.

About Me

I’ve been in human services for over 15 years, working in various roles—from clinical supervisor of community mental health to director of a human services agency supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to behavioral health training coordinator at the University of Alaska. I have a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and specialized training through the Existential Humanistic Institute.

Personally, I got hooked on existential philosophy back in my early twenties, while wrestling with feelings of depression and meaninglessness. Reading Kierkegaard's Sickness Unto Death, made me realize if I ever wanted my life to improve, it was up to me to do something about it. Now, I love helping others discover that same sense of possibility—where you recognize the freedom to choose and shape your own life.

Review of Working with Dan:

As a 41yo dad juggling work and home life Dan helped me navigate some past issues getting in the way of my ability to connect with my wife, and then progressed to reevaluating my values to include my growing family.

Dan's approach from the very beginning was sincere and intuitive, allowing me to see things from a perspective I hadn’t considered and allowing me to move forward at my own pace.

I highly recommend counselling if you’re stuck, and if you like Dan's sense of humour then you’re on the right track.
